On October 31, Okanagan Charter: An International Charter for Health Promoting Universities and Colleges celebrated the one-year anniversary of its first signatories.

Four leading groups within the health and wellbeing space, including NIRSA, came together at the Centre for Innovation in Campus Mental Health (CICMH) Annual Conference in Toronto to mark the occasion. Peter Mumford, NIRSA Canada Regional Representative and Associate Director of Campus Recreation at York University, represented NIRSA at this important milestone celebration.

“Being able to represent NIRSA internationally at the Center for Innovation in Campus Mental Health was an amazing honour,” says Peter. “The Okanagan Charter is an integral document that will bridge the various departments on collegiate campuses throughout North America as we strive to provide physically and mentally healthy campuses. I see NIRSA as the catalyst and activator for the continued growth and development of programs and services to improve physical and mental health.”

That is a role NIRSA takes seriously. In addition to endorsing the Okanagan Charter, NIRSA also recently brought Association thought leaders together with members of NAPSA and ACHA for the first inter-association dialogue about emerging issues and opportunities to improve the wellbeing of students across North America. NIRSA is also a partner for ACHA’s inaugural Mental Health Symposium, which will be held in Washington DC on November 13.

NIRSA will continue to activate avenues of partnership and innovation in its pursuit of advancing integrated cultures of wellbeing on campus and building healthy people and healthy communities worldwide.
