Financial Assistance through Scholarships & Grants

The NIRSA Foundation is dedicated to the personal and professional development of NIRSA members.

Committed to the future of campus recreation, the NIRSA Foundation proudly offers a variety of scholarships and travel grants to ensure NIRSA’s premier educational events are accessible for all NIRSA students and professionals. Members at all stages of their career benefit from learning, innovating, and networking experiences at these events. 

In response to the financial challenges and impact of COVID-19, the NIRSA Foundation has expanded its offerings to include need-based scholarships to the 2021 All Regions Virtual Conference and NIRSA 2022 Annual Conference in Portland Oregon.  

Need-based scholarships are for professional members with 2+ years as a member. Additional support to attend NIRSA 2022 Portland will include 7 travel grants to professionals with 2+ years as a member.   

Applications for the NIRSA 2022 Portland will open in August 2021 and be due on November 30, 2021. The NIRSA Foundation will award 14 (2 recipients from each region and Canada) to attend. 

Applications for travel grants to help attend NIRSA 2022 Portland will be due on November 30, 2021. Seven travel grants will be awarded: 1 per region and Canada.  

Scholarship Applications for NIRSA 2021 All Regions Virtual are now closed.

Specific submission guidelines can be found in the scholarship and travel grant applications.  

General Scholarship Eligibility Requirements

  • Applicants do not need to be a NIRSA member to apply for scholarships; however, recipients will be required to become a NIRSA member upon accepting a scholarship. 
    • If your professional membership has been impacted by the economic fallout of COVID-19, please contact membership@nirsa.org for information about the membership waiver program 
  • All application materials must be submitted by the deadline.

Need-based Scholarship Eligibility Requirements

  • Applicants have had 2+ years as a professional member
    • If your professional membership has been impacted by the economic fallout of COVID-19, please contact membership@nirsa.org for information about the membership waiver program
  • Your institution is not participating in the 2021 All Regional Virtual Conference institutional bundle
  • You are a member of one of NIRSA’s established regions or Canada.
  • The application must be complete by the deadline.

NIRSA Foundation Travel Grant Eligibility Requirements

  • Applicants have had 2+ years as a professional member
  • If your professional membership has been impacted by the economic fallout of COVID-19, please contact membership@nirsa.org for information about the membership waiver program
  • Travel grants will be awarded based on need to one NIRSA professional member from each NIRSA region and Canada.
  • The $1,000 (USD) grant is specifically designed to cover travel expenses associated with attending NIRSA 2022Portland (airfare, mileage, and hotel). Funds will be released in the form of a reimbursement check after NIRSA 2022 Portland.
  • The application must be complete by the deadline.

With scholarships available to students for the NIRSA Annual Conference and to professionals for all NIRSA-run institutes and education events, the NIRSA Foundation is committed to investing in the personal and professional development of the NIRSA Family at all stages of their careers. Travel Grants for Professionals

NIRSA Foundation Travel Grant, presented by CORE Health & Fitness, allows NIRSA professionals the opportunity to advance their careers in campus recreation without shouldering the expenses of travel and lodging. The $1,000 (USD) grant is specifically designed to cover travel expenses associated with attending the NIRSA Annual Conference and Campus Rec & Wellness Expo. Travel grants are possible because of corporate sponsorship.
