Adrianna Del Amo, Coordinator for Aquatics and Risk Management at East Carolina University, has worked in the campus recreation field for six years. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Exercise Science with a Minor in Communications and a Master of Science in Recreation Management—both her degrees are from the State University of New York at Cortland (SUNY Cortland).

Adrianna is a committed member of NIRSA: Leaders in Collegiate Recreation. She says, “I value the opportunity to connect with others across the nation. Rarely do I have a question where I can’t connect with someone on the message board for a solution. I value the professional development opportunities and the opportunity to learn more about the field during all the virtual round tables and caucuses.” She currently serves on the Creative Excellence Awards Committee and recently accepted the opportunity to serve on the 2022-2023 Campus Rec & Wellness Expo Committee. She says, “I am looking forward to being even more involved this year!”

Adrianna was introduced to the profession as an undergraduate at SUNY Cortland. She says that “learning about the professional field of campus recreation came to me as a surprise.” It was connecting with Eve Mascoli, Assistant Director for Aquatics and Facilities at SUNY Cortland, that opened her eyes to career possibilities in campus recreation and wellbeing. “I had no idea that working in the Aquatics industry as a young adult would set me up for a full time career,” explains Adrianna. Eve introduced her to NIRSA and gave her opportunities within the SUNY Cortland aquatics program that allowed Adrianna to gain valuable professional experience. This experience ultimately led her to pursue first graduate school and then “full-time campus recreation jobs after graduation.”

In her current position, Adrianna oversees aquatic programming, personnel, and assists with overseeing aquatic facilities. “I also oversee maintenance of the facility’s AEDs, first aid supplies, and safety service courses,” she adds. East Carolina University recently held its 26th annual Polar Bear Plunge. Adrianna says, “We fill up our outdoor pool and welcome close to 800 jumpers in designated heats of 15 people at a time. COVID has brought some unique challenges to this event, but we’ve still been able to offer it with some changes!”

Adrianna sits on several committees at East Carolina University Campus Recreation & Wellness, including the Risk Management Committee and the EDI Committee. She is proud to count Justin Waters, Assistant Director of Facilities & Outreach at East Carolina University, as a valuable professional mentor.

Recreation plays its role in Adrianna’s life outside of work too. She is an enthusiastic roller derby skater—”You can call me StunFlower on the track!” She also loves spending time outside hiking, running, swimming, and trail skating just to name a few of her recreation activities. “Anything outside” sparks her interest.

NIRSA: Leaders in Collegiate Recreation is lucky to have Adrianna Del Amo as a dedicated NIRSA member and campus recreation leader!
