If you’ve ever considered serving on a NIRSA committee or work team, there has never been a better time to get involved. Volunteering for NIRSA, the NIRSA Foundation, or the NIRSA Services Corporation isn’t just a service to the Association—it’s one of the most transformative steps you can take in your own leadership journey. Whether you're hoping to meet new people, stretch your skills, or influence the future of campus recreation, committee service is an opportunity worth taking. But many members hesitate because of lingering myths or misunderstandings. Let’s clear the air and highlight what serving on a NIRSA committee is really like.
Myth #1: “Committees are only for seasoned pros or campus rec superstars.”
Reality: Committee service is for anyone eager to grow, contribute, and make an impact. You don’t need decades of experience or an impressive title. New professionals, students, mid-level leaders, and directors all bring something valuable to the table. Committees intentionally include a mix of voices, so ideas are fresh, well-rounded, and representative of our diverse membership. If you’re curious, passionate, or ready to learn, there’s a place for you!
Myth #2: “Committees don’t actually shape anything important.”
Reality: Committees are in fact where major conversations, decisions, and innovations take root. NIRSA committees are central to advancing the Association’s work, whether developing new initiatives, reviewing and updating policies, supporting major events, or informing the direction of campus recreation. When you volunteer, you are directly influencing the future of the field. And the impact doesn’t stop there. Your participation helps shape learning experiences for the colleagues you serve alongside. When you collaborate, share knowledge, or ask good questions, you’re actively contributing to the professional development of others.
Myth #3: “Committee work won’t really help my career.”
Reality: Serving on a committee strengthens your professional brand and gets you noticed. Volunteering allows other members to see your ideas, your reliability, your creativity, and your commitment to the field. These connections often lead to:
- Collaborations
- Mentorship
- Invitations to present
- Career opportunities
- Increased visibility in the Association
Nothing builds your professional reputation quite like showing up and contributing.
Myth #4: “I don’t have the skills yet to contribute meaningfully.”
Reality: Committee service is one of the safest, most supportive ways to develop new skills. Stepping outside your comfort zone doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Committees offer real opportunities to try new things with encouragement from peers. You might:
- Facilitate a portion of a meeting
- Contribute to event planning
- Help shape a project timeline
- Practice public speaking
- Review content proposals or award nominations
- Lead a charge task or working group
Your confidence grows because you get to practice leadership in an environment designed to help you succeed.
Myth #5: “It’s too confusing to know where to start or what the roles involve.”
Reality: You don’t have to know everything before applying; just bring your enthusiasm. Every committee provides orientation, guidance, and support. You’ll learn along the way. What matters most is your willingness to participate and share your perspective. Plus, NIRSA provides opportunities to explore committees, understand expectations, and ask questions, especially during the annual information session.
