The Assembly includes a mix of professional members, student members, and nonmembers. Seats are structured to ensure diverse perspectives and continuity in addressing future-focused topics. The Assembly may expand up to 30 members when additional expertise is needed.  

professional members

5+ years of Membership (6 seats)

  • Term: 2 years, staggered (3 members selected each year) 
  • Eligibility: Professional members with five or more years of NIRSA membership  
  • Appointment: Appointed by returning members of the Assembly; approved by the NIRSA Board of Directors    

professional members

Under 5 years of Membership (4 seats)

  • Term: 2 years, staggered (2 members selected each year)  
  • Eligibility: Professional members with fewer than five years of membership 
  • Appointment: Appointed by returning members of the Assembly; approved by the NIRSA Board of Directors

Student Members

(3 seats)

  • Term: 1 year 
  • Eligibility: Current NIRSA student members  
  • Appointment: Appointed by returning members of the Assembly; approved by the NIRSA Board of Directors

Open seats – members or Nonmembers

(minimum 6 seats)

  • Term: 1 year 
  • Appointment: Appointed by returning members of the Assembly; approved by the NIRSA Board of Directors
  • Purpose: Provides flexibility to bring in specialized knowledge; unique perspectives or strategic partners 

Convener of the assembly

  • Term: 3 months as Convener-Elect, followed by 1 year as Convener
  • Eligibility: Former Assembly member with at least 2 years of service in the past 5 years
  • Appointment: Appointed by current members of the Assembly; approved by the NIRSA Board of Directors

Past presidents’ representative

(1 seat)

  • Term: 1 year
  • Appointment: Elected by NIRSA Past Presidents

Board of directors’ representative

(1 seat)

  • Term: 1 year (renewable)
  • Appointment: Appointed by the President
  • Purpose: Ensures communication and alignment between the Assembly and the Board
