The 2018 Emerging Recreational Sports Leaders Conference—which provides minority students interested in careers in collegiate recreation with the tools and connections they need to succeed—has two exciting preconference opportunities for interested attendees! Join Florida International University Wellness and Recreation at the Biscayne Bay Campus with expert Jonathan Torrey for a coastal clean-up. During this Community Service Project, volunteers will work to clear marine debris from the mangrove habitats on the Bay side in tandem kayaks or by walking the shoreline along the campus trail. Transportation will be available to and from the hotel. Attendees should plan on meeting in the hotel lobby on Thursday, January 18 at 8:30am with cleanup beginning at 9:00am. Afterwards, lunch will be provided from 12:00pm–1:30pm. While the walking cleanup is free, if you and a partner are interested in the kayak cleanup, cost is $5/per person and registration is limited to ten kayakers.
The HBCU Summit 2018 is another ERSL 2018 preconference opportunity. The summit’s focus is on creating awareness around the opportunities and challenges collegiate recreation professionals at HBCUs face and to give individuals who are at non-HBCU universities and colleges a chance to connect. Come learn from each other in this engaging and unique atmosphere. The summit will be held on Thursday, January 18 from 8:30am–4:30pm on the FIU Biscayne Bay Campus.
