NIRSA welcomes Dr.
Scott Brooks, professor of Sociology and Black Studies at the University of Missouri and co-founder of the Careers in Sport Academy (in Southern California), as the keynote speaker at the 2013 Collegiate Sport Club Symposium in St.
Louis, Missouri on June 12-14.
As keynote speaker, Dr.
Brooks will share his model for developing sports professionals and illustrate how sport club programs can get the most out of their academic partner by accessing important information and knowledge, building bridges across campus, collaborating on research, and identifying possible mentors and advisers.
Dr. Brooks has grounded his research through his experiences as a basketball coach and observing participant. A native of Oakland, California, Brooks earned his bachelor’s degree at the University of California in Berkeley and received his doctorate in sociology at the University of Pennsylvania while coaching youth basketball in South Philadelphia. He has published his findings in academic journals, as well as edited volumes and textbooks on the subject. His work has been quoted and reviewed by the Wall Street Journal and SLAM magazine. He is the author of Black Men Can’t Shoot (University of Chicago 2009) and is currently working on two manuscripts regarding coaching and the urban production of professional basketball players.
Dr. Brooks’ dedication to sport clubs and their leaders makes him an outstanding fit among the educational sessions and networking opportunities over the multi-day NIRSA’s Collegiate Sport Club Symposium. Inspired by his keynote address, let Brook’s model for developing sports professionals help focus the sessions and roundtable discussions. With a strong host of experts in the field, attendees will return to their home institutions with fresh ideas and new insight into how to successfully develop, manage, and revitalize collegiate sport clubs.
The Drury Hotel in downtown St. Louis will serve as host hotel. Hotel Information, registration, tentative schedule, and keynote presenter information is all available on the NIRSA website.
