Ultimate

Overview & Examples

Ultimate, originally known as Ultimate Frisbee®, is a limited-contact team sport played with a 175 gram flying disc. The object of the game is to score points by passing the disc to a player in the opposing end zone, similar to an end zone in American football or rugby. Players may only move one foot while holding the disc.

Traditional Formats

Intramural programs offer ultimate in men’s, women’s, and co-rec formats. Teams generally consist of between six and eight players. Some programs offer league play while others offer ultimate in a tournament setting only.

Staffing

Even at the highest levels of competition, ultimate is self-officiated by the participants. Intramural programs often employ a supervisor or field monitor to help settle disputes and answer questions.

Rules

Ultimate is a sport that is very informal in nature. USA Ultimate is the governing body for the sport in the United States. The game has few rules which allows for intramural programs to modify and mold the game to fit their needs.

Notes & Variations

Game length and overtime procedures differ between programs and should be outlined based on a program’s preference.
