“I firmly believe, especially in the field of campus recreation, that growth comes through the evolution of our practices,” says Micah Walters, West Coast Regional Manager at Mondo, a NIRSA Platinum Partner.

Micah challenges campus rec professions to rethink their work, embrace continuous learning, and conduct thoughtful self-examination at the free webinar “Thinking Again” at 9:00am PT/noon ET on Monday, September 27. Micah, along with Jason Foster, adjunct instructor at West Virginia University and UNC-Wilmington, will use personal anecdotes and the book Think Again by Adam Grant to illustrate ways in which “thinking again” has helped people realize self-awareness, grow, develop, and find greater humility.

When he discovered the book from a friend on LinkedIn, Micah recognized an opportunity for personal and professional development. The book encouraged him to examine prior-held convictions and revealed strategies to connect with others who see the world in a different way.

“Whether that’s utilizing more empathy in my interactions with people or trying to solve problems from a new perspective, challenging my patterns has helped me grow,” he says.

Before landing at Mondo, Micah spent more than ten years working in campus recreation at Central Michigan, Colorado State, and Clemson universities. Jason also spent many years in campus rec before transitioning to the academic side of higher ed. From these past experiences, Micah knew that in higher ed “the only constant is change” and identified the book as distinctly relevant to campus rec.

“By focusing on how we can think differently in an ever-evolving field, campus recreation professionals are able to best serve their students,” Micah explains.
