About Mrs. Lee Wasson

Beulah Lee Clark (better known in NIRSA circles as “Mama” Lee Wasson) was born in Hillsboro, Georgia and raised in Detroit, Michigan. In 1944 upon completion of her early education, Mrs. Wasson enrolled in Dillard University’s Bachelor of Science, Nursing program. After graduation, she returned to Detroit and began her nursing career in orthopedics at Harper Hospital. Mrs. Wasson later worked at Sinai Hospital where she headed and implemented several significant changes in the medical industry before retiring. Mrs. Wasson was married and has three daughters with her first husband.

Mrs. Wasson met Dr. William Wasson in 1980 while attending a Dillard University Alumni Meeting in Detroit, Michigan. They married two years later.

She accompanied Dr. Wasson to all national conferences from 1989 on and for more than three decades has been an inspiration to NIRSA’s members. Dr. Wasson inspired her commitment to NIRSA and now one of her greatest pleasures is networking with NIRSA’s students and professionals, making new NIRSA friends, and renewing longstanding friendships. In 2010, she was honored at the NIRSA People of Color Social when the event was named in honor of her and her commitment. (Source: 2018 Lee Wasson People of Color Social program)
