By Nicole Green-Valentine, the University of Michigan and Flag Football Editorial Board Chair

Recently, the NIRSA Board of Directors approved a proposal for the creation of an editorial board for the NIRSA Flag & Touch Football Rules Book & Official’s Manual. This rules book was first published in 1983 to provide a standardized code of rules, interpretations, and officials’ mechanics for the sport of flag and touch football. The newly-established Flag Football Editorial Board will be responsible for updating and revising this biennial publication.

In its first year (2015-2016), the inaugural editorial board will work to develop a process for the recruitment, appointment, and application of future editorial board members. Additionally, guidelines will be established for the review and editing process—including consideration of rules and mechanics changes.

In its second year (2016-2017), the inaugural editorial board will use the established processes to edit the rulebook in preparation for March 2017 publication.

Applications are now being accepted for nine open editorial board positions:

  • Rules Book Editor (1)
  • Officials Manual Editor (1)
  • NIRSA Professional Members (5)
  • NIRSA Student Member (1)
  • At Large Member (1)

Applications for the 2015-2017 inaugural term will be accepted from May 1-31. Applicants will be notified by July 1 regarding their application appointment to the NIRSA Flag Football Editorial Board. Additional information—including detailed editorial board charges, the application form, and position requirements and terms—can be found on the NIRSA website.
