“This was a great opportunity to work closely with a group of professionals in a variety of professional development exercises,” says Corey Sinclair, Recreation Collegiate Sport Clubs Coordinator at Central Washington University. “The fact that there were under 50 attendees provided some great opportunities to network and make meaningful connections that can be difficult when attending a larger conference.”

Mid-level professionals are strongly positioned to lead within organizations by contributing to organizational culture, leading colleagues, influencing change, and critical decision making. With the right mindset and skill set, mid-level professionals have a positive impact on their organization and team. Building healthy, productive teams is critical for success. That’s why this year’s School will focus on themes related to organizational culture, people management, and topics related to value-based decision making and resource management.

Using the common reading book Radical Candor by Kim Scott as the foundation of this week-long, immersive experience, attendees will explore the following questions:

How can I motivate and inspire my staff? How can I manage down, across and up within my organization? How can I contribute positively and productively to guide change within my organization? How do organizations make big decisions and how can I be a part of it?

Working with peers from across the industry and with the guidance of experienced faculty from various backgrounds and experiences in the field, attendees will establish strong and enduring professional relationships while exploring these competencies as well as discuss additional career development opportunities!

Andy Rampe, Coordinator of Competitive Sports – Intramural Sports at the University of North Carolina Wilmington says, “The NIRSA School of College Recreation Level II was one of the best experiences I have had while being a NIRSA member. It allowed me to grow and learn from some great professionals in our field. It also allowed me to network with some colleagues I may have never had the opportunity to meet. If you ever get the opportunity to attend the School, do it, you won’t be disappointed.”
