NIRSA: Leaders in Collegiate Recreation is pleased to announce that the latest Standards for Collegiate Recreation Programs (CRP) are now available! The CRP standards have been in review since 2015 and were approved by the Council for the Advancement of Standards in Higher Education (CAS) in November 2016. CAS is a consortium of 42 student service professional associations that develop and promulgate standards and guidelines and encourage self-assessment. NIRSA has been a member of CAS since 1981.
The standards revision process began at the 2015 NIRSA Annual Conference in Grapevine, Texas. Following NIRSA 2015, the NIRSA CAS Standards Revision Task Force was formed to begin the review process. An expert review group was later selected to review the recommendations of the CAS Task Force. Ultimately, nine drafts of the CRP standards were developed before the final version was approved by the CAS Board of Directors. In addition, key changes to the Contextual Statement were also approved and include references to the role recreation has on student health and wellbeing and student learning.
The CAS CRP Standards and Guidelines and the Contextual Statement are available on the NIRSA CAS webpage. The corresponding self-assessment guidelines—as well as other valuable resources regarding learning and development outcomes, shared ethical principles, and a guide for using the standards for program review—are available for purchase on the CAS website.
