NIRSA is excited to announce the debut of our Recreation 101 Virtual Course series! Throughout Summer and Fall 2024, we will be launching four virtual courses that each cover one of four functional areas within collegiate recreation: Intramural Sports, Sport Clubs, Recreation Officiating, and Esports. As the “101” tag suggests, these on-demand courses will cover all the basics you need to know to establish a core knowledge base and get up to speed with key conversations and resources in each functional area.

Are you an early career professional engaging with one of these domains in a full-time capacity? Are you switching your areas of professional or academic focus? Do you want an opportunity to brush up on the fundamentals? If any of these circumstances resonate with you, the Recreation 101 series is just the opportunity you’ve been looking for!

Recreation 101 virtual courses offer approximately four content hours of on-demand video that have been designed and produced from the ground up to reflect current knowledge in the field. Once you’ve signed up for the course, you can engage with this material whenever you like and at your own pace. A team of experts in each functional area has designed and sequenced the courses with this purpose in mind. The series is intended to be evergreen and each course will be regularly reviewed and revised to showcase current best practices in the profession; the lifecycle of each course intentionally extends past this year’s launch window.

In 2024, NIRSA will be launching a roster of courses with the following start dates:

  • Introduction to Collegiate Intramural Sports 101: Tuesday, June 18
  • Introduction to Collegiate Sport Clubs 101 (with special thanks to our sponsor, USTA): Wednesday, July 24
  • Introduction to Collegiate Recreation Officiating 101: Wednesday, August 7
  • Introduction to Collegiate Esports 101: Wednesday, September 25

We’ll be expanding this lineup to cover other branches of collegiate recreation, so please let us know what new courses you’d like us to develop!

NIRSA members will be able to register for these courses on a personal basis or with an institutional bundle option. This bundle grants five members of the same NIRSA member institution a discounted flat rate for these virtual courses. Optionally, if you wish to purchase a bundle and register more than five individuals, any additional registrants receive a 65% savings over regular individual pricing. Have the funds set aside to register now but want to take the course when it opens later? Contact us and designate a prepay amount via card or check to apply towards the registration amount.

Participants in the Recreation 101 virtual courses will have access to a dedicated NIRSA Connect community to share resources and interact with fellow participating colleagues. At the end of the course, participants will receive a certificate of completion to acknowledge and celebrate their achievements.
