Student demand for outdoor fitness and recreation space continues to rise, signaling a key trend that isn’t dissipating in the post-pandemic world. While many colleges and universities have guidelines for the amount of square footage per student they should provide for indoor recreation, forward-thinking campus rec departments are staying ahead of the trend by providing outdoor areas for health education and fitness training.

Campus rec professionals curious about the impact of outdoor fitness spaces on campus life should join Florida Gulf Cost University’s Suzanne Ries and Lisa Caldwell along with PLAE’s Brittany Barrett for “It’s a Great Day to PLAE Outdoors: Funding, Designing & Programming an Outdoor Fitness Space.” The webinar occurs at 4:00pm Eastern/1:00pm Pacific on Tuesday, April 19, and is free to NIRSA members and non-members alike. A recording of the content will be available for anyone who can’t make the live discussion.

“At NIRSA 2022 in Portland, we heard over and over again that rec centers are interested in the opportunity outdoor spaces provide but do not necessarily know where to begin in regard to planning and designing,” Brittany, Director of Student Recreation Business Development at PLAE, said. “With this webinar, we are here to help bridge the gap between the indoors and outdoors!”

Suzanne, Lisa, and Brittany will help attendees discover how to bring outdoor fitness to their schools by examining:

  1. The value outdoor spaces bring to total wellness for students, faculty, and staff.
  2. Design and budget considerations for an engaging outdoor fitness space—including equipment recommendations, form and function of the space, and more.
  3. Development of inclusive, creative programming based on facilities’ evolving student populations.
