Every year on February 22, NIRSA members celebrate Recreational Sports & Fitness Day in commemoration of NIRSA’s founding date. Rec Day is an opportunity to remember when Dr. William Wasson brought together 20 intramural directors from 11 Historically Black Colleges and Universities to share his research on collegiate recreation. This historic day led to the start of NIRSA, an association beloved by so many individuals today.

What began as just 11 schools coming together to discuss intramural activity in 1950 is today a nation-wide phenomenon all about supporting the idea that recreation on campus matters and has value. Here are some glimpses at incredible creative 2019 #RecDay festivities from the world of Instagram!

Here is a thank you video that the University of Tennessee, Knoxville RecSports uploaded to give a shout out to all its amazing Rec Day participants.

Hofstra Recreation invited its campus to commemorate Rec Day with a game of bubble soccer—also offering Kan Jam, cornhole, and a three-point contest to anyone interested!

Schoolcraft College went above and beyond, celebrating Rec Week instead of just Rec Day.

And Central Washington University produced a video asking participants to answer the all-important question “How do you rec?”

This is just a small look at some of the great things rec departments across the country did to help make Rec Day a wonderful experience for the participants on their campuses. Check out the #recday hashtag across Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook to view even more examples of departments and individuals taking advantage of Rec Day 2019 to get moving in celebration of what Dr. William Wasson started so many years ago.

Thank you!
