During the hiring process, many employers use phone interviews to screen a large applicant pool and determine who should be brought in for a face-to-face meeting. Phone interviews are also often used when interviewing candidates based in other cities. They save the cost of having the applicant drive or fly into town for an in-person interview.

The 2018 Emerging Recreational Sports Leaders Conference Program Committee has decided to create a phone interview environment at the conference for attendees. Attendees who choose to be interviewed will learn where their strengths lie and where they may need to work to improve performance. They will practice and prepare for real-life interviews.

Phone interviews are becoming a common first step in the job interview process, so it’s important that you do everything you can to be prepared for one. Phone interviews come with their own special challenges. For example, a phone interview is likely the first time you speak with a representative from the employer. Unlike emailing back and forth, a phone interview offers no chance to re-read and re-formulate your thoughts.

During the mock phone interviews, interviewers will follow a rubric as they grade interviewees on specific criteria. If you’re interested in participating in the mock interviews—as either the interviewer or interviewee—please contact me. Those interested in being interviewed, should also submit their resume to me by January 6, 2018.

ERSL 2018 will offer attendees many fantastic opportunities apart from the mock phone interviews. Don’t miss out on this unique chance to network and connect with your peers—register today! Anyone who registers before December 13 can take advantage of early bird pricing.
