Do you have a mentor who’s inspired your interest in the field of collegiate recreation? Do you know someone who continues to deepen your commitment to the students you serve? Is there a role model who embodies the following quote by John Quincy Adams: “If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more, and become more, you are a leader”? If you answered yes to any of these questions, NIRSA has a great way for you to say thanks.

Consider showing your appreciation and celebrating your mentor’s commitment to developing the next generation of leaders by nominating them for a 2018 Horace Moody Award! The deadline to submit a nomination is November 15, 2017.

Awarded for contributions to student development

Every year, Horace Moody Awards are presented to seven NIRSA professional members—one from each of the seven NIRSA regions—who have made significant contributions to student development. Recipients will be announced during the Student Member Connection Meeting held at the 2018 NIRSA Annual Conference & Campus Rec and Wellness Expo taking place at the Denver Convention Center, March 4-7.

Ryan Wingers, 2017 Region II award recipient and Director of Programs and Risk Management at Georgia Southern University, knows that being a professional in collegiate recreation means developing future leaders and working with innovative professionals within collegiate recreation.

“The nomination alone is humbling,” he says. “There are times you wonder if you are doing more wrong things than right. But it is encouraging when your peers think enough of you to recognize you with a nomination.”

“It is encouraging when your peers think enough of you to recognize you with a nomination.”

It is also humbling to receive a Horace Moody Award when there are so many generous individuals involved in campus recreation.

“To actually receive the award is very gratifying because there are so many others just as deserving, if not more so, than you are,” he says.

Region VI 2017 Horace Moody Award recipient Beth Glazer, Assistant Manager at UCLA , felt honored to receive the award.

“There is no greater sense of satisfaction than knowing you truly made a difference in someone’s life.”

“It justified all the hours and hard work I spent in meetings convincing committees and units within my large department of how important the student development aspect of our work is,” she says. “Awards like this prove that we are always teaching students. There is no greater sense of satisfaction than knowing you truly made a difference in someone’s life no matter if they stayed in the field or not.”

The nomination period ends soon

This opportunity to honor the outstanding professionals in your community who have made significant contributions to student development ends on November 15, so nominate your mentor for a 2018 Horace Moody Award today!
