On Friday, January 6, the NIRSA Championship Series will kick off the new year with the NIRSA National Flag Football Championships at Ashton Brosnaham Park in Pensacola, Florida. This year’s tournament will be hosted by the University of West Florida and will involve teams from four divisions: Women’s, Men’s, CoRec, and Open.
The NIRSA Championship Series gives students an opportunity to compete, coordinate, officiate, and connect with skilled peers from other schools and take all the benefits of recreational competition to a higher level.
And it’s more than just competition, the NIRSA Championship Series is also a platform for professional development, as up-and-coming professionals build skills and engage in all levels of learning through their programming, staff, official, and volunteer positions.

Friends, family, and fans who are unable to travel to Pensacola have the opportunity to live stream the event from the Flag Football page of the NIRSA Play website or directly from this Stretch Internet Portal page. The championship games will take place on Sunday, January 8, with the CoRec Collegiate Championship at 10:30 am CST, the Women’s Collegiate Championship at 12:00 pm CST, and the Men’s Collegiate Championship at 1:30 pm CST.
“The NIRSA National Flag Football Championship Tournament is a great opportunity for students from all over the country to compete for a prestigious national championship. I am looking forward to seeing all the different styles of play and communication, the skill and ability from so many young athletes, and even the bizarre additions to uniforms,” says Mark Comer, RCRSP, Assistant Director of Competitive Sports, University of Baltimore and chair of the Flag Football Work Team.
“The tournament this year,” he adds, “will also be the most interactive it has ever been, with nonstop social media coverage and live streaming of the championship games. The Series tournament offers the highest level of flag football and these student athletes and officials have worked tirelessly to get to Pensacola and I cannot wait to see their hard work pay off!”
More than just competition
This tournament is a premier event for intramural and club teams because of the passion of volunteer leaders that drive the exceptional execution of our professionally organized tournaments, which propels the experiences and growth opportunities of participants.
The rich environment of inclusive competition, sportsmanship, and professional development—from participants to fans to volunteers—supports communities of health and wellness, which is what NIRSA is all about.
