In February, NIRSA partnered with the College and University Professional Association for Human Resources (CUPA-HR) as well as with other higher education associations to offer a webinar on the Department of Labor’s anticipated changes to the Fair Labor Standard Act’s overtime exemption eligibility. The proposed change will raise the minimum salary threshold for executive, professional, and administrative employees to qualify as exempt from overtime from $23,660 to $50,440. This webinar, “FLSA Overtime: How, When, and Why to Prepare” is still available on demand from CUPA-HR.

As campus employers with perhaps significant numbers of exempt salaried employees under the current threshold, the NIRSA Policy & Legislation Committee has been working closely with the Consortium on Government Relations and Student Affairs to monitor the legislation, advocate for reasonable application of the law in higher education settings, and best prepare members for the coming change. In September 2015, shortly after the Department of Labor published the Notice of Proposed Rulemaking, NIRSA signed on to the extensive comments submitted by CUPA-HR regarding the concerns of higher education professionals.

CUPA-HR has recently committed to a follow-up webinar on the final rule. This webinar is scheduled for Wednesday, May 25 at 1pm EST for a 90-minute event. Attorney Alex Passantino, with Seyfarth Shaw LLP, will provide an in-depth look at the final rule, and many of our higher education HR practitioners on the panel from the previous webinar will return to offer further guidance on campus implementation. The event will again be free for NIRSA members.

We would recommend you register on the webinars page by clicking “Register now.” You will be directed to a page to sign in—click on “create a new account.” Fill out the necessary fields, including a username and password. Once you’ve created a new account, you’ll receive a registration confirmation via email. And a day or two before the event, you will also receive a reminder message that includes event access information. If you run into registration issues, at that point you can contact the Member Services Team (MST) at CUPA-HR.

For up-to-date information and registration, once available, continue to watch the CUPA-HR webinar website, as well as NIRSA’s social media channels.
