This year’s theme will revolve around Drive: The Surprising Truth About What Motivates Us by Daniel H. Pink

The days will be organized in 3-4 hour time blocks that will cover specific topics related to the chosen book.

Participant Outcomes

Participants will work collaboratively with other attendees to identify and address problems (case studies) related to current trends, topics, and issues in collegiate recreation and higher education. As a result of attending this event, an attendee will be able to:

  • Understand the key concepts of Drive (autonomy, mastery, and purpose) as factors that influence motivation of one’s self and others
  • Apply strategies to more effectively build teams and lead/manage student employees

  • Articulate the value of recreation and wellness as vital to achieving the academic mission of a university

  • Develop strategies for professional growth and advancement

6:00pm-8:00pm Overview, introductions, and why “Drive“is our common reading
Monday, May 20:
9:00am-6:00pm Education Program – The concepts covered during the first day will relate to autonomy, including self-awareness, working with others, and working across difference. Lunch provided with event registration
6:30pm School Social (appetizers)
Tuesday, May 21:
9:00am-6:00pm Education Program – The concepts covered during the second day will relate to mastery, including collaboration vs. cooperation and human resource management. Lunch provided with event registration
Wednesday, May 22:
9:00am-Noon Education Program – Concepts covered during the third day will be related to purpose, utilizing a design thinking approach to developing a purpose-filled career. The afternoon will be free for cohorts to have lunch with their cohort leader and work on their case study presentation. No meals provided
Thursday, May 23:
9:00am-6:00pm Education Program – Groups will present assigned case studies to the group in the morning. The afternoon topics will include promotability and a full group debrief of the School. Lunch provided with event registration
7:00am-9:00pm Closing dinner and Graduation
