Once again, NIRSA used a lottery drawing to decide which teams would participate in the Open Division at the 2018 NIRSA National Soccer Championships. The lottery draw took place at Florida State University’s soccer stadium where David Peters, Associate Director of Campus Recreation, was our host. Assisting David in the 2018 lottery draw process was Marty Dempsey, Assistant Director of Facility Operations at the University of Florida, and Chris McAlpine, Assistant Director of Student Development and Marketing at the University of Texas at Dallas. Both provided great insight into the tournament and the selection process.

One hundred and thirty teams tuned into and watched in suspense as the 48 available spots were filled one by one. Although we could only accept 48 teams, the remaining teams have been placed on a waitlist and shouldn’t give up hope yet. Some teams selected in the lottery may qualify for the Championship Division through regional tournaments and so will need to be replaced in the Open Division by a waitlisted team.

The soccer championships are going back to Foley, Alabama where teams will battle for the championship title at the Foley Sports Tourism Complex from November 29 to December 1. NIRSA would like to thank the City of Foley and the Foley Sports Tourism Complex for their support and hard work in making sure this year’s National Soccer Championships are going to be fantastic!

Congratulations to the following teams that were selected for the 2018 NIRSA National Soccer Open Division and best of luck to the teams competing for a bid into the Championship Division!
