Every February 22, NIRSA members across the country celebrate National Recreational Sports & Fitness Day, a commemoration of NIRSA’s founding date. Rec Day is a time to remember when Dr. William Wasson brought 20 intramural directors from 11 Historically Black Colleges and Universities together to share his research on collegiate recreation. This historic day led to the start of an association so many people are invested in today!

NIRSA members use Rec Day as a way to not only celebrate NIRSA and Dr. Wasson, but habits of health and wellbeing. Rec Day festivities have gotten more and more elaborate every year as NIRSA institutions and members promote fun activities like Zumba dance parties to get people up and moving. Take a look at the NIRSA Rec Day 2015 recap to see how members have celebrated Rec Day in the past, and considering purchasing personalized Rec Day shirts  by February 4 to get dressed up for the occasion!

Another way to add to the celebrations is to email NIRSA Communications Coordinator Nazifa Islam a photo of you participating in a fun rec activity. Throughout the month of February, NIRSA will be posting photos of members participating in recreational sports and activities on the @nirsalive Instagram account as a way to celebrate both Rec Day 2016 and the many members who make NIRSA and the entire collegiate recreation field so great. Help the Association show off its amazing members and send in your photos today!

And keep an eye on the #RecDay hashtag on both Instagram and Twitter as we get closer and closer to February 22—schools have already started posting and tweeting about their 2016 celebrations!
