February has been a busy month! Time is flying, but I’m happy report a lot of wonderful progress and developments in our NIRSA Championship Series.
In Club Basketball, things are going great with the league and the pod system.
The goal of the pod system is to have each team play at least 10 games throughout the season, and, based off the teams’ records, the team with the highest winning percentage will be crowned league champion.
That champion will then receive a bid to the National Championship Tournament. Throughout the season, teams volunteered to host tournaments, and, though it has taken a tremendous amount of time to put this endeavor together, the results have been outstanding.
I’d like to give a huge shout-out and thanks to the league commissioner, Aubre Jones, and referee assignor, Bhavin Parekh, who have been invaluable to this process.
Moving on to Series Brand Management, I hope everyone can take a moment and read the article pertaining to the NIRSA Championship Series and the implementation of social media by Gary Cahen, Brand Management Work Team Chair. It’s a great read that highlights the progressiveness and relatable connectivity we’re trying to achieve within the Championship Series for our professionals and participants–awesome work, Gary!
I’m enthused to announce that Brooke Turner, Intramural Sports Coordinator from Kennesaw State University, has been appointed as the NIRSA Championship Series Vice-Chair starting in June 2014. She currently serves as Chair for the Standards of Competition Work Team, and she is currently assisting the NIRSA Championship Series by drafting a policy with an ad hoc committee to advocate the inclusiveness of transgendered individuals within the Championship Series. We look forward to seeing Brooke continue her great, impactful, and invaluable work as Vice-Chair!
Finally, I’m also thrilled to announce that the three Work Team Chairs for 2014-2016 have been selected. They are as follows:
- Basketball: Aaron Hobson, University of Wisconsin-Madison
- Flag Football: Brian Mills, University of Houston
- Standards Tom St. John, Springfield College
I hope everyone has a great March, and don’t worry–Spring Break is right around the corner! Stay focused and take care!
Onward,
JE
