Hello NIRSA family, I have outstanding news! The 2017 Emerging Recreational Sports Leaders Conference Program Committee is now accepting presentation proposals! The Program Committee—composed of myself; Barry Greene, Fitness and Wellness Coordinator at California State University, San Bernardino; and Brittany Rejda, NIRSA Assistant Director for Professional Development—has set the submission deadline for Friday, December 2.

Please consider this opportunity to present at the 25th ERSL Conference, which is themed “Power of the Past…Force of the Future.” The conference is taking place from January 19–21 at remarkable Jackson State University in Jackson, MS.

We are calling on everyone who has ever participated in or attended an ERSL Conference in the last twenty-five years—trust me, you don’t want to miss this one! The success of this event depends on you—it depends on members choosing to contribute by registering for the event and submitting presentation proposals. I know I speak for the entire Program Committee when I say that I hope you will consider joining us.

NIRSA professional and student members who submit proposals and are among the first ten to have their proposal selected will serve as lead presenters and will receive a courtesy time preference. This means they’ll have the option to select the day and time they would like to present, which is definitely a reason to get excited!

Presentation proposals should align with NIRSA’s eight core competencies, and the Program Committee has selected the following three topic areas to focus on for this upcoming ERSL Conference:

Programming

  • Specialized programming—intramural, sport clubs, fitness, etc.—or programming for special populations
  • Effective program development, scheduling, and delivery

Philosophy and Theory

  • Trends in recreational sports as well as health and wellness theories and models
  • Professionalism and ethics
  • Student development theories
  • Participation-based philosophical perspectives
  • Standards of practice, issues of equity and diversity, and student affairs issues and theories

Personal and Professional Qualities

  • Problem solving
  • Prioritization
  • Adaptability
  • Networking
  • Analytical skills

You don’t want to miss out on this fantastic chance to share your knowledge—submit a presentation proposal by Friday, December 2! We can’t wait to see you in Jackson!
