WHAT are the Summer Leadership Meetings?

A weeklong opportunity for NIRSA leadership to meet and discuss various ways to help members get the most out of their membership. The week was comprised of informational brainstorming sessions with various groups of leadership as well as some nitty gritty internal planning for initiatives taking place during the coming year.

WHO attended?

The 2016–2017 Student Leadership Team, the Member Network, the NIRSA Board of Directors, NIRSA Headquarters staff members, members of the NIRSA Foundation Board of Directors, and members of the NIRSA Championship Series Committee.

WHERE were they held??

Washington, D.C. The summer meetings are held at the location of the coming year’s annual conference. In this case, at the Gaylord National where the 2017 NIRSA Annual Conference & Recreational Sports Expo will take place from February 21–24. The location of the Summer Leadership Meetings allows NIRSA leadership to plan for the Annual Conference logistically and be equipped to answer FAQs at their respective state and regional conferences leading up to the event.

WHEN were the meetings?

The 2016 Summer Leadership Meetings were held from June 14–19.

WHY do we have summer meetings?

As the Student Leadership Team, we really set out to discover our “why” during this week of goal setting and planning. Because of this, I believe that moving forward we’ve found our identity as a unit. We operate more frequently as a “virtual team” that’s rarely all in the same place throughout our term, so we made the most out of the chance to spend time together.

But don’t just take my word for it. Check out what the SLT had to say about their experience at the Summer Leadership Meetings!

So, as noted in the video, we’d like to emphasize early in our own leadership year that we want to recruit student leaders interested in playing a role in next year’s Student Leadership Team! The application deadline will be here before you know it. A resume and cover letter discussing your interest will be due to elections@nirsa.org on Tuesday, September 27. For more info, visit the NIRSA Member Network page.

And again, if you have any questions or are interested in getting involved, don’t hesitate to reach out to one of us!
