By Austin Anderson, Assistant Professor at the University of Southern Indiana and Alice Kersting, NIRSA Special Projects Coordinator

NIRSA is thrilled to have been invited to partner with the College and University Professional Association for Human Resources (CUPA-HR) as well as with other higher education associations to offer a webinar on the Department of Labor’s anticipated changes to the Fair Labor Standard Act’s overtime exemption eligibility. The proposed change will raise the minimum salary threshold for executive, professional, and administrative employees to qualify as exempt from overtime from $23,660 to $50,440. As campus employers with perhaps significant numbers of exempt salaried employees under the current threshold, the NIRSA Policy & Legislation Committee has been working closely with the Consortium on Government Relations and Student Affairs to monitor the legislation, advocate for reasonable application of the law in higher education settings, and best prepare members for the coming change.

“FLSA: How, When, and Why to Prepare” will take place on February 16 from 2:00-3:30pm EST. It will be hosted by CUPA-HR, which has generously extended free registration to NIRSA members. Visit CUPA-HR’s website for more information about the webinar and to register to attend. Please note that new users to CUPA-HR’s website will need to create a free account before registering—directions to do so are listed at the bottom of the page. Register for this free webinar today!

Learn more about how the proposed FLSA rule change could particularly impact collegiate recreation on the NIRSA website, and share your institution’s preparation plan by joining the conversation in the NIRSA Connect discussion group focused on the subject. Feel free to contact a member of the NIRSA Policy & Legislation Committee with any questions about how changes to the Fair Labor Standards Act could affect your campus.
