By Stan Shingles, NIRSA President and Assistant Vice President at Central Michigan University and Pam Watts

The highly-anticipated, newest issue in the renowned New Directions in Student Leadership series from Wiley is on the verge of being released! “Student Leadership Development through Recreation and Athletics” has been shaped by NIRSA volunteer members and authored by experts in the field of collegiate recreation. As an added benefit of membership, the Association will be sending all NIRSA institutional members a complimentary copy of this exciting publication!

“Student Leadership Development through Recreation and Athletics” was coedited by current Chair of the NIRSA Conference Program Committee Cara McFadden, PhD and Assistant Professor of Sport and Event Management at Elon University, and At-Large Director on the NIRSA Board of Directors Don Stenta, PhD and Recreational Sports Director at The Ohio State University. Cara and Don co-chaired NIRSA’s Leadership Commission from 2012-2014 and in co-editing this publication had the opportunity to work closely with several other long-serving NIRSA volunteer members and colleagues on NIRSA’s Leadership Commission—including Gordon Nesbitt, PhD, Millersville University; Stacey Hall, RCRSP, PhD, University of New Hampshire; Julie Wallace-Carr, PhD, James Madison University; and Sarah Hardin, PhD, DePaul University. The resulting publication offers readers an extensive look at leadership learning occurring in campus recreation.

This new issue in the New Directions in Student Leadership series will extend the conversation regarding leadership development that has been taking place among commissioners and other NIRSA members for some time now. Collegiate recreation professionals will soon be able to use this tool when looking to provide concrete, competency-based leadership development outcomes for their students who are engaged with campus recreation.

Additional copies of this publication can be purchased online for the list price of $29—though NIRSA members can take advantage of a 25% discount off all Jossey-Bass publications. This discount is one of the many offered as a benefit of NIRSA membership.

NIRSA invites all members to continue the conversation regarding student leadership development in campus recreation on NIRSA Connect and through social media. And be sure to share your perspective about the publication with your regional NIRSA leaders at upcoming local and regional NIRSA conferences this fall.
