Dr. Scott Forrester’s The Benefits of Campus Recreation—a study commissioned by NIRSA and funded by generous donors to the NIRSA Foundation—represents the most comprehensive effort to date to substantiate the positive impact that participation in campus recreation opportunities has on students. While The Benefits of Campus Recreation—alongside numerous other research projects—is available to all members on the NIRSA website, the Association is pleased to announce that NIRSA’s institutional members will be receiving a hard copy in the mail next week.

NIRSA continues to support its institutional members—and to advocate for the field of collegiate recreation—by providing credible evidence documenting the value of campus recreational sports, activities, facilities, programs, and services to students attending college and university campuses.

The Benefits of Campus Recreation encompasses Dr. Forrester’s comprehensive analysis of the NIRSA/NASPA Consortium Nationwide Survey. The data set—which contains responses from over 33,500 students across 38 different colleges and universities across the United States—underlies the report’s credible, accurate, and compelling results. Key findings include that students who participate in recreational sports opportunities have increased retention rates as well as improved health and wellness.
