If you want to be a catalyst for action, generate results, and vet ideas in a highly-participatory think tank, consider submitting an application to serve on the NIRSA Assembly! The Assembly is the leadership body of NIRSA that focuses on the dynamic and long-term needs of the collegiate recreation profession.

JT Timmons, Director of Recreational Services at The University of Iowa, describes the Assembly as “a platform to discuss various topics affecting students and professionals in collegiate recreation. Many of us are doers but as Assembly members we need to step away from that and focus on thinking, on possibilities, on representing as many NIRSA members as possible.”

The Assembly seeks energetic members with a capacity to contribute innovative ideas and who are committed to advancing the profession. Aaron Tripp, Fitness Coordinator at the University of Minnesota, finds it rewarding to “be part of something bigger than myself. I love being a part of a conversation that will carry on for years to come, hopefully creating a future plan or structure for those that come into the field years from now.”  For JT the most rewarding aspect of serving on the Assembly has been “working with a new group of folks I might not have otherwise connected with. The variety of Assembly members lends itself to that.”

Whether you possess a broad, working knowledge of the profession, strategic expertise, or a passion for current and relevant topics related to collegiate recreation, you are encouraged to apply! Terms begin on July 1 and there are positions open for both new and experienced NIRSA members:

  • Student Members
  • Professional Members Less Than Five Years
  • NIRSA Members (i.e. Professional, Life, Emeritus, or Associate)
  • Open Seats (any member or non-member)

The NIRSA Assembly is a great vehicle for contributing your talents and ideas to advance the profession.  Stephanne Musser, Assistant Director Fitness Services at The Ohio State University, states that “the conversations that are happening on the Assembly are purposefully relevant to the future of our profession and so much good has come from this ‘ground up’ effort. With all of the different experiences and insights that are shared, you really do learn and share a lot. To be a part of that is very exciting.”

If you want to be a catalyst for action, consider serving on the collegiate recreation profession’s think tank—submit an application to become a NIRSA Assembly member. Applications will be accepted through Monday, April 20.
